Extra-light weight receiver loops are used as front or rear (Slingram) loops with both Wallaby and Wallaroo systems. It can also be used independently as a roving walked receiver loop with a receiver with GNSS time signal synchronization. We find that large area trumps having a large number of loop-turns as self-inductance increases with the square of the number of loop turns. Further, pre-amplification amplifies both movement noise and signal, so it is better to make a bigger loop rather than to pre-amplify more.
With our octagonal all-equilibrating support structure, we find that movement noise is strongly damped but loop area remains stable. The octagonal shape reduces width compared to diamond shape, and slightly reduces ratio of self-inductance to loop area too.
The loop has floppy, 7 core or 12 core wire and a pre-amplifier. At the pre-amplifier, switches allow different numbers of turns to be switched in – for a conductive site all turns may be switched in, while for a resistive site, less turns will be switched in so that signal does not get to race through the resistive media to great depth before self-inductive response drops to acceptable levels.
The collapsible loop is elastically held together such that it can be pulled apart and collapsed into a long slender bag in tens of seconds.
